Day 1: Moshi/Arusha β†’ Marangu Gate (1,860 m) β†’ Mandara Hut (2,720 m)

  • Drive Time: 1.5 to 2 hours from Arusha | 45 min from Moshi

  • Trek Distance: 8 km (5 miles)

  • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours

  • Elevation Gain: 860 m

  • Vegetation Zone: Rainforest

Your journey begins with a morning pickup from Arusha or Moshi and transfer to Marangu Gate for registration. The trek starts through the lush rainforest, where you may see colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and tropical birds.

Upon arrival at Mandara Hut (2,720 m), enjoy a short acclimatization hike to Maundi Crater, offering spectacular views of Kilimanjaro’s peak.

Day 2: Mandara Hut β†’ Horombo Hut (3,720 m)

Today, leave the rainforest and enter the moorland zone, with its giant lobelias and senecio plants. The path offers stunning views of Mawenzi Peak (5,149 m).

Upon arrival at Horombo Hut (3,720 m), relax and enjoy the panoramic mountain scenery.

Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut

  • Optional Hike to Zebra Rocks (4,020 m) – 3 km (1.9 miles), 1.5-hour ascent

  • Purpose: Improve acclimatization for summit success

This extra day at Horombo Hut helps your body adjust to the altitude, reducing the risk of altitude sickness.

You’ll take a short acclimatization hike to Zebra Rocks, a unique rock formation with black-and-white striped patterns. The rest of the day is for resting and hydration to prepare for higher altitudes.

Day 4: Horombo Hut β†’ Kibo Hut (4,703 m)

  • Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles)

The trail continues through the Saddle, a barren, lunar-like landscape between Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks. The air becomes thinner, so a slow and steady pace is essential.

Upon arrival at Kibo Hut (4,703 m), rest and prepare for the midnight summit attempt.
