Nyerere National Park

Highlights

Nyerere National Park, covering a vast 30,893 square kilometers, is the largest national park in Tanzania. Formerly known as the Selous Game Reserve, it stands out as one of Africa’s top destinations for wildlife viewing. As the continent’s oldest and largest game reserve, the park offers not only remarkable biodiversity but also stunning natural beauty.

What makes Nyerere unique is the variety of safari experiences available. Beyond the classic game drives, visitors can enjoy boat safaris, guided walking tours, and fly camping in remote areas teeming with wildlife. These immersive activities allow for a deeper connection with the landscape and a truly memorable adventure.

Thanks to its relatively easy access and lower visitor numbers compared to more northern parks, Nyerere is a superb choice for both romantic African honeymoons and family-friendly safaris. It’s one of the few places in Tanzania where you can enjoy such a wide range of safari options in one destination, making it an essential stop on any Southern Circuit safari itinerary.

Explore the Nyerere National Park

In the northern section of Nyerere National Park lies an intricate system of canals and lagoons branching off from the Rufiji River. These waterways provide a vital year-round water source, creating a lush and life-sustaining habitat. As the dry season approaches its peak, wildlife increasingly gathers around these remaining water bodies, dramatically boosting the density of animals in the area.

Most safari camps and lodges are strategically positioned along these rivers and lakes, taking full advantage of the animals’ need for water to offer prime game-viewing opportunities. The best time to visit is from July to mid-November, when the dry season is in full swing and wildlife congregates around the park’s few permanent water sources, making sightings more frequent and dramatic.

Nyerere’s game statistics rival those of any park in Africa. It boasts some of the highest populations of elephants, buffalo, and lions, consistently observed throughout the year. However, what truly excites wildlife enthusiasts is the park’s distinction as one of the last strongholds of the endangered African wild dog, offering a rare chance to see these elusive predators in their natural habitat.

Time to visit Nyerere National Park

The optimal time for wildlife viewing in Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) is during the dry months from late June to October. During this period, animals are more easily seen as they congregate around dwindling water sources and the vegetation becomes sparse, improving visibility.

From October to May, the park transforms into a vibrant green landscape during the wet season. While the scenery is stunning, daytime temperatures can become uncomfortably hot. Additionally, many camps and lodges temporarily close between March and May due to heavy rains and accessibility issues.
