The day’s route covers approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) and involves a significant altitude gain to 4,600 meters, followed by a descent that supports your body’s adaptation to higher elevations.
-
Your first milestone is the striking Lava Tower (4,600 m)—a massive volcanic rock formation and popular acclimatization stop. The trek to Lava Tower typically takes 4 to 5 hours, during which you’ll pass through the stark and beautiful alpine desert zone, characterized by volcanic scree, minimal vegetation, and sweeping views of the western breach of Kibo.
-
At Lava Tower, enjoy a short rest and lunch at altitude, giving your body time to adjust. From here, begin your descent into the lush Barranco Valley, where the landscape transforms dramatically into giant groundsels, lobelias, and hanging cliffs.
Arrive at Barranco Camp (3,950 m) by mid to late afternoon. Tucked beneath the imposing Barranco Wall, this is considered one of the most scenic camps on the entire Lemosho Route, offering majestic views of the southern glaciers and the sheer rock face you’ll climb tomorrow.

This day is vital for acclimatization—“climb high, sleep low”—and plays an important role in increasing your success rate for reaching the summit. After settling in, enjoy a hot drink, a hearty dinner, and a restful night under the stars.

Today’s trek begins with one of the most memorable features of the Lemosho Route—the Barranco Wall. After breakfast, depart Barranco Camp (3,950 m) and start your ascent up this towering natural obstacle. Though it appears intimidating from camp, the wall is a non-technical climb that requires some light scrambling, and your guide will support you every step of the way.
As you ascend the steep, zigzagging path, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views over the Barranco Valley, the southern glaciers, and Mount Meru in the distance. The climb takes about an hour, after which the trail levels out and continues across undulating terrain of alpine ridges and valleys.
Trek approximately 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) over 4 to 5 hours, moving through starkly beautiful moorland landscapes with wide-open skies and expansive views of Kibo Peak. Along the way, enjoy rest stops for hydration and light snacks while your body continues adjusting to the higher elevations.
By early afternoon, arrive at Karanga Camp (4,000 m), perched on a small plateau with sweeping views of the Karanga Valley below and the summit looming above. After checking into your tent, enjoy a hot lunch and plenty of time to rest or take short acclimatization walks around the area.
